Trail Blazers earn first win of the preseason at Sacramento Kings

The Portland Trail Blazers took advantage of a poor shooting night from the Sacramento Kings and got a double-double from rookie center Donovan Clingan during a 105-85 win Sunday at the Golden 1 Center.

Clingan scored 10 points with 10 rebounds off the bench, and point guard Scoot Henderson had a much better night than in the preseason opener. Henderson led the Blazers with 17 points and added seven assists with just one turnover.

New forward Deni Avdija, who missed Friday night’s 101-99 loss to the LA Clippers in Seattle, started but produced just five points with five rebounds in less than 20 minutes of action. He shot 2 of 8 from the field and 1 of 4 on threes.

The Blazers, still without Shaedon Sharpe (shoulder), Robert Williams III (hamstring), Anfernee Simons (ankle) and Matisse Thybulle (knee), started Toumani Camara at shooting guard while Kris Murray returned to a bench role.

Camara scored 13 points with four rebounds. Starting midfielder Deandre Ayton scored 11 points with eight rebounds.

The Blazers’ bench scored 50 points, led by Delano Banton’s 12. He also added six rebounds.

WHAT IT MEANS

The Blazers (1-1) did not play much better offensively than on Friday evening, but defensively they made it difficult for the Kings.

Sacramento shot 41.7% from the field while connecting on just 5 of 28 three-point shots (17.9%). The Kings committed 27 turnovers that the Blazers converted into 33 points.

HENDERSON RISES

Henderson performed well after a poor shooting performance Friday night. Against the Clippers, he scored 13 points on 4 of 16 shooting (1 of 6 on threes) and committed seven turnovers.

On Sunday he showed better control of the attack and took better care of the ball.

However, he didn’t shoot that well, making 5 of 13 shots, including 1 of 3 from beyond the arc.

PACESETERS

The Blazers picked up the pace again.

Portland played at a pace of 106.4 compared to 102.1 against the Clippers.

Last season, Portland had a pace of 97.9 possessions per 48 minutes, which ranked 21st in the NBA.

A stated goal this season is to play at a faster pace.
