Could Kiké Hernandez get in trouble for dropping an F-bomb on live TV? – NBCLos Angeles

It was the f-bomb heard around the baseball world.

After the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres 2-0 on Friday night to advance to the NLCS, Dodgers third baseman Kiké Hernandez sat down with Ken Rosenthal for a post-game interview. And one of his answers wasn’t exactly family friendly.

When asked what’s different about this year’s Dodgers team, Hernandez first asked Rosenthal if they were live. Rosenthal said “yes,” and then Hernandez said, “The fact that we don’t care.”

The interview then ended.

So now that Hernandez has dropped one of George Carlin’s seven banned words on live television, could he face a fine or suspension from the MLB or the Federal Communications Commission? What about the channel that aired this obscenity, Fox?

Let’s take a closer look:

Could Kiké Hernandez be punished for his f-bomb?

Technically, MLB can penalize a player for any behavior that is “not in the best interest” of baseball. However, there is no modern precedent of a player being fined for simply saying the f-word.

Furthermore, the FCC does not punish people for violating federal law banning certain profane language on television.

Could Fox get in trouble for airing the f-bomb?

Yes.

According to the FCC, using profane language deemed “highly offensive” and causing a public nuisance on television broadcasts may result in an admonishment/warning, a fine, or a revocation of the broadcaster’s license. The latter won’t happen in this case, but Fox could be admonished or fined by the FCC for airing the f-bomb on their airwaves.
