Auburn NFL overview: Darius Slayton replaces Malik Nabers for Giants

Four games into his NFL career, New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers led the league with 35 receptions for 386 yards and three touchdowns. But a concussion forced him to miss Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

The Giants needed someone to help the prized rookie avoid falling to 1-4. It turned out to be Darius Slayton.

The former Auburn wide receiver entered the 2024 season with 122 yards on 10 receptions. In New York’s 29–20 win over Seattle, Slayton had eight receptions for 122 yards and one touchdown as he recorded the sixth 100-yard receiving game of his career.

“We moved Slayton to where Nabers was a bunch,” Giants coach Brian Daboll said, “and he was usually on the other side, so now he has to learn the whole thing — not learn because he’s been with us since we got here, and one of the reasons is that he is very reliable and smart. So to hear a personnel group from training camp and such, you go to this position and suddenly you have to turn around and go to that position – that’s Slay He though is a great teammate and he has always done what we asked of him. I have said that countless times.

Slayton caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Daniel Jones as New York took a 17-10 lead with 10:41 left in the third quarter. The touchdown was Slayton’s first of the season and 20th of his career.

“For me, it’s actually the opposite,” Slayton said of Sunday’s changes. “Where I’m used to going, I go the other way. I just try to do my best to remember that. I’ve definitely gone the wrong way a few times. I’ve done it. I was able to do a decent job today.”

Slayton started the touchdown drive with the longest play of the game for the Giants: a 41-yard reception. But he was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct during the game and lost fifteen meters.

Slayton was one of 17 former Auburn players who took the field on the fifth Sunday of the NFL’s 105th season.

Two other former Auburn players were involved in the New York-Seattle game:

· Derick Hall started at outside linebacker for the Seahawks. Hall made six tackles, recorded one sack, recorded two quarterback hits and forced one fumble.

· Seahawks cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett (Jackson) made one tackle and broke up one pass.
