Giants’ Greg Joseph misses two field goals in loss to Bengals

Greg Joseph’s motto is that one kick doesn’t define him.

If it were, Joseph’s photo would appear next to the term “bad timing.”

After the Giants converted a fourth down on an 11-play drive, Joseph hooked wide and left a potential tying 47-yard field goal for the first of his two fourth-quarter misses during a 17-7 loss to the Bengals on Sunday at MetLife. Stadium.

“It felt good (from my foot),” Joseph said. “I have to watch the film, be strict with myself, reassess, see what I want to solve mechanically and mentally process-wise. And go from there.”

It appeared the field goal operation went smoothly with 10:27 to go, with longtime snapper Casey Kreiter delivering the ball to new holder Matt Haack, who replaced the injured Jamie Gillan as both the kicker and holder.

“Every ball I put my foot on is mine,” Joseph said. “I expect to be able to make every kick.”

Haack was signed on Saturday, so there was very little time for the three to align before matchday.

“We felt comfortable with him,” head coach Brian Daboll said. “We’re not going to make any excuses for that.”

The miss might have shaken Daboll’s confidence in Joseph.

Instead of attempting another potential 54-yard draw with 3:01 to go, Daboll left the offense on fourth-and-3 and Daniel Jones threw an incompletion.

“I thought it was right on the cusp of his range,” Daboll said. “We felt like it was best to go for it on that fourth spot down there.”

Joseph is 17-for-29 from 50 yards or further during his career, including a 61-yarder to beat Daboll’s Giants on Christmas Eve 2022.

“Coach’s choice,” Joseph said. “When my number is called, I’m ready to go out.”

Joseph finally got a second chance with 51 seconds left – when the Giants tried to make it a one-score game and crossed for an offside. He missed again – wide left from 45 yards.

Joseph was in his fourth game since being signed after Graham Gano suffered a hamstring injury.

Gano is eligible to come off injured reserve this week — bad timing for Joseph — but he hasn’t had a heavy workload in practice yet.

Just two weeks ago, Joseph made all five of his field goal attempts in his home debut for the Giants. It was an important rebound from the week before, when Jones missed a right wide from 48 yards and Daboll was lukewarm in his subsequent show of confidence.

The Giants have rookie kicker Jude McAtamney on their practice squad, but he is viewed more as a kickoff specialist at this point.
