Harrison Ford will see you now

Harrison Ford, legendary actor and sufferer of zero fools, star of Indiana Jones And Star Wars and a million glorious 90s conspiracy thrillers, is now improbably starring in a TV comedy.

About the Apple TV+ series Shrink, opposite Jason Segel and Jessica Williams, 82-year-old Paul plays the owner of a therapy practice. Paul’s gruff and no-nonsense style doesn’t feel so far removed from Ford, or at least from his public persona, including witty one-liners.

Come on Shrink season two, which debuts Oct. 16, Ford spoke GQ about how close he feels to Paul, whether he misses those thrillers, and that one fitting photo you saved on your phone. (You know the one.)

GQ: Shrink is your first adventure with full comedy. It’s also one of your few television roles. What appealed to you about it initially?

Harrison Ford: It’s not my first comedy. I mean, I’ve done a lot of comedies in movies. It might be my first television thing, but I’ve done a lot of things that were considered comedies.

Yes, that’s true. I guess it’s been billed as your first real comedy.

Well, and that’s not true either.

It’s sad!

Yeah, so let’s see what else we can debunk while we’re at it. Yes, no, the show is basically a mix of comedy and drama that is quite unusual and notable for its courage.

Why did you want to sign up for this?

The success of writing. It seems difficult to do, but it was done with grace and charm, and I thought it was successful when I read the script given to me by Brett Goldstein. And it was something I was immediately drawn to because of its success in both drama and comedy. I thought it was an unusual character to play.

Maybe we can debunk this too: A lot has been said about how your character on the show, Paul, is a lot like you, or at least your public persona. How accurate would you say that is?

Well, as an actor you really only have your own experience, your own ability to understand, and you’re stuck with yourself. It’s the chemistry you came with.

I don’t have Parkinson’s disease. There are many elements and details of Paul’s life that are different from mine, but I think he is a comic character. The humor was written for me; I’m certainly not making this nonsense up. But I lent my face and my head, so if it looks like me, I think it’s me.
