It’s Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day — and that means some places will be closed Monday, even as many doors remain open in North Texas.

Columbus Day, which was first recognized as a national holiday by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1934, while Indigenous Peoples Day was first recognized by President Joe Biden in 2021.

This isn’t the type of holiday that affects hours like Thanksgiving or Christmas, but there are some changes. Here are some sights for Monday:

Post office

All US Postal Service stores are closed and there will be no residential or business mail delivery in honor of Columbus Day.

Banks

The holiday impacts financial institutions in several ways. For example, Chase branches will be open, while Bank of America and Wells Fargo will be closed on Monday.

Because North Texas has a longer list of banks and credit unions, it may be best to contact your local branch.

However, the New York Stock Exchange and other investment platforms are open and operational on Monday.

City of Dallas, Texas

The City of Dallas offices will be closed Monday for Indigenous Peoples Day. This includes municipal courts, libraries and parks and recreation. Still, Dallas Animal Services is open.

Texas recognizes Indigenous Peoples Day, but it is not an official holiday for state employees, so state offices remain open.

Federal Government

Columbus Day is one of eleven federal holidays recognized nationwide by the U.S. government. All non-essential offices are closed.

Shops

Retailers such as Walmart and Target will remain open on Monday. Malls such as NorthPark Center in Dallas and Stonebriar Center in Frisco also welcome locals.
