A River LINE train struck a tree on the tracks Monday morning, killing the engineer and injuring 23 passengers.

The passengers’ injuries were not considered life-threatening and were described as “mostly minor,” according to a statement from NJ Transit.

The accident said the accident occurred around 6:04 a.m., about an hour before sunrise, while the Camden-bound train carrying 42 passengers was north of the Roebling station.

Officials express their concerns: Crime is a problem along Burlington County’s River LINE. But officials have a plan.

The River LINE schedule indicates that the first southbound train of the day left Trenton at 5:45 a.m. and would have been near the Roebling station at the time of the crash.

The light rail line halted service in both directions between Florence and Trenton due to a fallen tree over the tracks.

A replacement bus service was provided.

“We will attempt to reopen as quickly as possible once the on-site investigation is complete,” an NJ Transit representative said Monday morning.

Seventeen injured passengers were taken to Virtua hospitals in Willingboro and Mount Holly.

“A handful” were admitted, but most were assessed for non-life-threatening conditions such as whiplash, headaches and body aches, Virtua spokesman Daniel Moise said.

Additional details, including the name of the operator, were not immediately available from NJ Transit.
