NEW YORK – Cleveland’s interminable wait for a World Series title and the Yankees’ perceived drought collide Monday night at Yankee Stadium in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series.

The Guardians and Yankees will face off in the playoffs for the second time in three seasons and have finished fourth in the past eight seasons, with the Yankees prevailing in the 2017 AL Division Series, the 2020 Wild Card Series and the 2022 ALDS .

Yet both conquests ended at the hands of the Houston Astros in the ALCS, extending the Yankees’ drought for both a pennant and a World Series title until 2009.

Cleveland has been cooling its jets for a while.

The Guardians are aiming for their first World Series appearance since 2016 and their first championship since 1948. Cleveland came very close in 2016, when the Chicago Cubs extended the Series to seven games and prevailed in an extra-inning thriller.

One player from that Cubs team – Anthony Rizzo – stole the headlines before Game 1, as he was taken off the injured list just two weeks after suffering two finger fractures when he was hit by a pitch. Rizzo sat out the ALDS victory over the Kansas City Royals, while Oswaldo Cabrera and Jon Berti occupied first base in his place.

Lefty Carlos Rodon, chased in the fourth inning of ALDS Game 2, and Guardians right-hander Alex Cobb – whose three-inning start in ALDS Game 3 was only his fourth appearance this season – are the starting pitchers.

Follow us for updates from Monday’s match:

NEW YORK – Juan Soto was able to eradicate a handful of flaws with runners in scoring position with one swing of the bat.

Soto drove an Alex Cobb sinker to right field for a 1-0 Yankees lead in the third inning of Game 1 in their American League Championship Series.

The Yankees couldn’t capitalize on four at-bats with runners in scoring position in the first two innings, a streak started by Aaron Judge’s strikeout. But in the third, Soto stuck a 2-1 pitch from Cobb 350 feet into the Yankees bullpen for his eighth career postseason home run and first as a Yankee.

After Cobb walked the next batter, Judge, a Guardians trainer came out to examine Cobb – making only his fourth start this year due to a variety of injuries – but the 37-year-old stayed in the game.

NEW YORK – Game 1 of the American League Championship Series is underway and it could be an uncertain night for the starting pitchers.

Oh, neither the Cleveland Guardians nor the New York Yankees scored in the first inning, but both starters struggled a bit through their opening frames in a series where, let’s say, starting pitching isn’t expected to dominate.

Rodon, who couldn’t complete the fourth inning in his ALDS Game 2 start against Kansas City, needed 20 pitches to stifle Cleveland in the first inning, striking out Lane Thomas to leave David Fry at second base . Righthander Alex Cobb, making only his fourth start of the season for Cleveland, gave up a first-pitch single to Gleyber Torres and another single to Juan Soto, but struck out Aaron Judge and got Austin Wells (groundout) and Giancarlo Stanton (high fly to left) to escape without damage.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour stage is being set up in Miami for her concerts this weekend, but it appears the singer is not in Florida. She’s in the Bronx attending the New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Guardians game with beauty Travis Kelce.

The couple was seen in one of the suites toward right field. Swift wore a black cap and jacket. Kelce wore a black cap that said “Midnight Rodeo” and a dark jacket. Next to them sat comedian Jerrod Carmichael.
