Hits on David Pastrnak set up multiple Bruins-Panthers fights

BOSTON – Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery said he wanted his club to get back to playing hockey and be more disciplined when Boston hosted the Florida Panthers on Monday afternoon.

Montgomery’s message clearly missed the point as the Bruins took five penalties in the first period against their Atlantic Division rival.

Ex-Brown AJ Greer ran at David Pastrnak along the wall, leading to the Boston star coming up with blood coming from his lip. Pastrnak’s linemate Pavel Zacha objected to the hit and dropped the gloves to Greer. It was only the second fight in Zacha’s career. The first time he dropped the gloves was when he fought now-teammate Nikita Zadorov when Zacha was playing for the New Jersey Devils and Zodorov was wearing an Avalanche jersey. Zacha lost both fights.

As the pair sat in the penalty area for a tussle, Charlie McAvoy sent a pair of cross-checks to Carter Verhaeghe. Unfortunately for the Bruins, Sam Reinhart scored his second goal of the season just six seconds into the man lead.

Things remained unsettled when Pastrnak was called for interference against Reinhart. Panthers defenseman Nate Schmidt objected to the hit and walked toward Pastrnak, but before Schmidt could reach his goal, Brad Marchand literally jumped over Pastrnak to drop the gloves with Schmidt.

This marked the second straight Bruins-Panthers fight involving fisticuffs. Greer fought Boston newcomer Mark Kastelic last Tuesday at the American Bank Arena.
