9:07 PM: Tim Herrin keeps the Yankees quiet

Despite the Guardians’ problems stranding runners against Gerrit Cole, the bullpen has kept the Yankees from blowing the game open thus far.

After 1.2 shutout innings from Cade Smith, Tim Herrin pitched a scoreless fourth and gave up only one hit to Torres.

8:59 p.m.: Cleveland leaves the bases loaded

The switch to David Fry didn’t work, as he threw the first pitch he saw to Jazz Chisholm Jr. for a big number 2.

Stepped up Rocchio, who was frozen by a breaking ball in the outside corner for a called strike three to end the inning as the Guardians left the bases loaded and missed a golden opportunity to get on the board. Still a 3-0 lead for the Yankees in the bottom of the fourth.

8:52 PM: Guardians load the bases in the fourth

The Guardians have the best chance for runs in this Game 2, loading the bases with one out. Bo Naylor was supposed to bat, but he was just recalled for David Fry. Big gamble by Stephen Vogt to go to his bench so early in the game.

8:45 p.m.: Cade sails through the third

Cade Smith made quick work of the Yankees in the bottom of the third, needing just 10 pitches to retire the side and allow an Anthony Volpe strikeout to end the inning.

Still 3-0 Yankees in the fourth.

8:38 p.m.: Guardians strand a pair in the third

Missed opportunities bit the Guardians late in Game 1, and they resurfaced in the third inning. A single by Rocchio and a walk gave the Guardians two with one out in the third.

However, Kyle Manzardo struck out and Jose Ramirez flew out to center to end the inning. The Guardians have left three on base in the last two innings.

8:27 PM: Cade Smith leaves the inning with only one run added

Cade Smith found himself in a nearly impossible situation: bases loaded, one out and Aaron Judge at the plate. Judge hit a sacrifice fly to center to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead. But Smith came back to strike out Austin Wells to get out of the inning, keeping the score at 3-0 entering the third.

Bibee’s line is 1.1 innings of work, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits, two strikeouts and one walk.

8:22 p.m.: Tanner Bibee finishes in the second

Tanner Bibee’s Game 2 ended with him playing just 1.1 innings. He is pulled after Stephen Vogt called for the intentional walk to Gleyber Torres to load the bases for Aaron Judge.

Vogt goes to Cade Smith with one out in the second and the Yankees ahead 2-0, with a chance to break the game open.

8:19 PM: Yankees extend their lead

The Yankees start teeing off on Tanner Bibee, getting three straight hits to start the second inning. Alex Verdugo doubled to left field to score Anthony Volpe, giving New York a 2-0 lead.

Carl Willis wants to talk to Bibee as the Yankees pass command to Gleyber Torres with two in scoring position and no one out.

8:10 p.m.: Josh Naylor’s single isn’t enough in the second

The Guardians have their first hit of the night thanks to a leadoff single from Josh Naylor to start the second. But Cole retired the next three batters, including striking out Brennan, to get out of the inning.

8:01 PM: Bibee minimizes the damage

Brayan Rocchio’s pop-up cost the Guardians a run. But Tanner Bibee got the better of his shortstop, retiring three straight hitters, including strikeouts from Austin Wells and Jazz Chisholm Jr., to get out of the inning.

He also got help thanks to a great sliding catch from Will Brennan in foul territory in right field.

After 1, the Yankees are up 1-0.

7:53 PM: Rocchio’s mistake costs the Guardians early

Brayan Rocchio has had a great postseason for the Guardians so far. But he made a mistake by dropping a high pop-up into the infield off the bat of Aaron Judge, allowing Gleyber Torres to score, giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead with no one out in the bottom of the first.

Torres led off the inning with a double and Juan Soto singled to move Torres to third base before the error.

7:45 PM: Guards go 1-2-3 to start

Gerrit Cole made short work of the Guardians in the top of the first inning, retiring the side. Jose Ramirez ended the inning with a long drive to right field that Juan Soto caught on the warning track. Tanner Bibee takes his first turn against the Yankees lineup in the bottom half of the inning.

7:39 PM: Game 2 in progress

Steven Kwan hits the road for the Guardians to kick off Game 2 of the ALCS. The first pitch hits the outside corner for a called first strike.

7:26pm: The challenge the Guardians face tonight

If the Guardians want to tie the ALCS tonight, they need to find a pitcher in Gerrit Cole who has dominated the Guardians as much as any team has in his career.

In 12 regular-season starts against Cleveland, hitters have just a .178 batting average, third-lowest of any team Cole has faced. He has allowed just 23 runs in those 12 games.

6:46 PM: When will the Guardians return home?

After Game 2 tonight, the Guardians and Yankees head to Cleveland for Games 3-5 of the ALCS. Here is the schedule for the next part of the series. All times Eastern and all games are on TBS.

6:29 PM: Guardians make roster moves ahead of Game 2

Prior to Game 2 between the Guardians and Yankees, Cleveland made a move to the playoff roster. Alex Cobb, who started Game 1, was taken off the roster due to left hip and back pain, forcing him to leave the game in the third inning.

Ben Lively will take his place on the roster.

6:15 PM: Starting Lineups Game 2
