Major temperature fluctuations with rain in the valley/mountain snow soon

MISSOULA — Today’s weather conditions will be a copy and paste of yesterday: mild temperatures of 70 degrees with mostly sunny skies and mist.

Enjoy it while it lasts another day, because tomorrow everything changes!

A cold front currently appears to be passing through on Wednesday afternoon. The front will cause a slight increase in wind, precipitation and major cooling.

Rainfall in the valley could range between 0.05″-0.15″ on the low side and 0.50″-1.00″ on the high side between Wednesday and Thursday. Projected snow totals have dropped since yesterday, leaving only 1-2 inches at the highest elevations.

Snow levels will drop to around 3,500 feet, but there may not be much precipitation left Thursday morning. As a result, the impacts of this system will be mainly limited to the hinterland and mountain passes.

The temperatures will probably be the biggest difference we feel. Highs should drop into the upper 40s and low 50s for both Thursday and Friday. Expect a hard frost, possibly later this week.

Overall, this change should be beneficial in ending fire season, but tomorrow you’ll want to break out the sweaters and grab your umbrella!
