Texas cheers as fall weather appears!

A strong cold front has finally brought fall weather to Texas. The front has yet to move into the southern third of Texas and will do so later today. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected again this afternoon and Thursday along the lower Texas Gulf Coast, the Rio Grande Valley and deep South Texas. Locally heavy rain is possible, with accumulations of one to five centimeters. Rain is also possible Thursday evening in Far West Texas in the Borderland (El Paso region).

High temperatures across the state this afternoon will be 20 to 30 degrees lower than last weekend. The northern two-thirds of Texas will peak in the 60s through 70s, with 70s and 80s in the south. Tonight will be relatively chilly, with highs in the 30s and 40s along and north of Interstate 10. That won’t be cold in the winter, but since most of us are used to summer, it will be by morning feel fresh.

High temperatures will remain pleasant until mid-October as we close out the work week. A slow warming trend begins Friday, with above-average temperatures returning to Texas early next week.

Multiple rain showers are likely in the Texas Panhandle and West Texas this weekend. There are also heavy rain showers and some strong thunderstorms. The western half of the Texas Panhandle could see two to three inches of rain, while West Texas could see a quarter to three-quarters of an inch of rain possible. Unfortunately, rain chances are unlikely to spread further east – as most of Texas remains dry for the next five days. Even at lower temperatures, the risk of wildfires is now very high across Texas.
