Tonight is the first frost of the season for many

Rochester, NY (WHAM) – Tonight will see our first frost of the season for many of us in WNY.

Atmospheric conditions will become favorable for frost tonight and possibly a frost well south of Rochester in the Southern Tier.

A freeze advisory has been issued for Orleans, Genesee, Monroe, Livingston, Wayne, Ontario and Yates counties from 8:00 PM to 10:00 AM Thursday morning.

A freeze warning was issued for Wyoming County during the same period.

Major high pressure will develop over WNY over the next few days. As a result, drier air will move into the city and that should clear some of the cloud cover tonight.

Clouds may linger in areas near the lake for part of the night and that could reduce the frost threat near Lake Ontario, especially northeast of Rochester in Wayne County.

Without the clouds, this will be one of those classic fall nights where we will see a brisk 10 to 15 degree temperature across the area. The southern tier could easily see low temperatures in the upper 20s tonight.

Areas near the lake may remain in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees due to cloud cover and relatively mild water temperatures in the 60s.

Just remember to shield any frost-sensitive plants you want to keep tonight.

If the plants can be easily moved, put them in the garage or shed until tomorrow morning. You can also cover planted flowers with a frost blanket, lightweight sheets or newspaper.

Do not use plastic wrap to cover plants, as water condensing on the inside of the cover can easily freeze into fragile plant tissue and cause frost damage.

Historically, this frost comes just in time for Rochester. We normally see our first frost of the season between October 10 and 20.

If you don’t like the cold, don’t worry: it won’t last long.

Warmer air will make a comeback in the coming days with temperatures possibly back into the 70s by the end of the weekend and early next week.

With the warming we also expect plenty of sunshine in the coming days.
