The storm could produce thunderstorms at times throughout Taos County beginning Thursday evening. Winds could reach 20 miles per hour Thursday, with “breezy” conditions expected in the upper Rio Grande Valley beginning Friday. The chance of precipitation – rain or a mix of rain and snow – around the Enchanted Circle and southern Taos County is 90 percent on Saturday.

In higher elevations, including Angel Fire and Taos Ski Valley, rain could turn to snow as early as Friday evening, meteorologists said. The chances of snow Sunday at Angel Fire and Taos Ski Valley are 60 percent, decreasing to 40 percent Sunday night. High temperatures will range from around 40 degrees on Thursday to around 30 degrees on Saturday. On Sunday the temperature at higher altitudes will be around 26 degrees.

“Snow levels will be quite high through Friday, even Friday evening in the Taos and Angel Fire area,” Guyer said. “You could see some snow falling Saturday morning, mainly in Angel Fire; Taos, maybe a mix.”

Between half an inch and two inches of precipitation is expected in the Taos area between Friday and Monday, with more rain and snow expected in higher elevations and northeastern and eastern New Mexico.

“Depending on whether or not that system is slower and colder air is present, there could certainly be an inch or two of snow around Angel Fire,” he added. “Taos Ski Valley could even see snow as early as Friday.”

But Guyer said because of the recent mild weather, “It will be hard to see how much; it will have to be snow soon because the ground is very warm.”

Residents shouldn’t expect the snow to stick around, especially at lower elevations. Monday (Oct. 21) will be cool, with highs around 59 degrees forecast in Taos, and lows around freezing. The forecast calls for Taos to see high temperatures in the upper 60s the next day, Tuesday.
