It’s now or never for the Cleveland Guardians.

At home among their roaring fans in the cozy confines of Progressive Field, the Guardians will look to delay the New York Yankees’ seemingly inevitable roll toward the World Series when the clubs contest Game 3 of the American League Championship Series on Thursday night.

The Yankees claimed a 2-0 series lead in New York after one timely pitching performance and the ability to make the Guardians pay for their mistakes. And their bullpen remains virtually impossible to crack: Yankee relievers have posted a 0.77 ERA in 23 ⅓ innings this postseason.

Guardians lefty Matt Boyd will be looking to go as long as possible in his third play-off start, even if that’s just three reputable innings. Meanwhile, right-hander Clarke Schmidt will look to build on his solid start in Game 3 of the AL Division Series, which tilted the game against Kansas City in the Yankees’ favor.

Follow us for updates on Thursday’s match:

CLEVELAND – Rookie Kyle Manzardo hit his first playoff home run in the third inning on Thursday to give the Guardians a 2-1 lead over the Yankees in Game 3 of the ALCS at Progressive Field.

Manzardo drilled a 3-1 pitch from Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt 390 feet into the right field seats to give the Guardians their first lead of the series. Manzardo’s home run had an exit velocity of 110 mph and also scored Brayan Rocchio, who led off the inning with a single.

The New York Yankees prove that taking a few weeks off from live pitching might be a good thing.

Jose Trevino, who had not batted in the postseason while backing up starting catcher Austin Wells, hit a sharp single to right field in his first at-bat since September 29, giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead in the second inning . of ALCS Game 3 in Cleveland.

Trevino got the start against left-hander Matthew Boyd when the left-handed Wells, who is 2 for 24 this postseason, was given the night off. Trevino came up on a one-out walk to Anthony Volpe and a double by Alex Verdugo, driving home Volpe with the shot to right.

However, Trevino was eliminated first, with Verdugo in third, diluting the potential for a bigger inning.

The Yankees got an immediate strike earlier this series from first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who singled in his first at-bat after a 15-day layoff due to finger fractures, and he had three hits in his first seven at-bats.

After the Yankees left a pair in the top of the first inning, the Guardians got runners to first and second base with nobody out after a walk for Steven Kwan and a single for Kyle Manzardo. New York starter Clarke Schmidt then struck out Jose Ramirez and got back-to-back groundouts from Josh Naylor and Lane Thomas to end the threat.

Game 3 of the ALCS starts at 5:08 PM ET on Thursday.
