First Alert Weather Day: Front Range rain with mountain snow this weekend

03:00 am

A strong, cold low-pressure system has moved into the region, bringing major changes to Colorado’s weather this weekend.

After a 24-day period of above-average dry weather, most of the state is preparing for precipitation. For the Denver metro area and Front Range, that will fall as rain starting Friday afternoon.

The high country will get a taste of winter this weekend, with as much as 2 feet of snow possible in some of our southern mountains.

Where weather could impact travel, winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings were issued this weekend for some mountain areas south of I-70. Most areas above 9,000 feet should see about 1-3 inches this weekend.

Rain will likely begin along the I-25 corridor by mid-afternoon and continue through early Sunday morning, bringing as much as 0.5 inches of rain to the Front Range. While this isn’t expected to be a total weekend outbreak, it will certainly start on a cooler, wetter note.

Temperatures on Friday and Saturday will only warm to the mid-50s, a drop of nearly 20 degrees from the 70s, which dominated the recent forecast.

Sunday will bring near normal temperatures and clearing clouds, and sunshine and the 70s will return next week.
