You may have seen an explicit political ad on WDIV on Friday.

The ad is aimed at anti-abortion rights activist and presidential candidate Randall Terry.

Federal law limits WDIV’s ability to reject or modify political advertisements from candidates for elective office, regardless of the explicit nature or offensive content of the advertisements.

After consultation with our station attorneys, because the advertiser is a legally qualified candidate running for President of the United States, we are obligated to provide the candidate with reasonable access to purchase reasonable amounts of airtime on our station; furthermore, we have confirmed that, under federal law, the ad cannot be censored in any way or its content altered by the broadcaster.

The ad will run in at least twelve US states ahead of the elections.
