Detroit Lions’ best trade offer for Maxx Crosby

The Detroit Lions have a clear need on the defensive line after the unexpected injury of star defensive lineman Aidan Hutchinson.

With a Defensive Player of the Year candidate likely out for the remainder of the season, Detroit will be hard-pressed to find a player capable of making the same level of contribution as Hutchinson. As a result, many experts and fans are pushing for the team to trade for a defenseman of similar caliber.

One player with local ties who fits this bill is Las Vegas Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby. Crosby played collegiately at Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti and is a natural fit from that perspective. He has the ability to be a big difference maker.

With the Raiders off to a 2-4 start and Crosby making cryptic comments indicating he’s unhappy with the way the team is going, the Lions could swoop in and make a deal for the talented player to bolster their stymied pass rush.

The cost wouldn’t be cheap as players in Crosby’s position are in high demand. Crosby also has two more seasons of team control, as he is under contract through 2026. Additionally, Raiders owner Mark Davis has said the team has no plans to sign him.

As a result, the Lions would have to make an offer that the Raiders simply cannot refuse. Here is our trade proposal to try and bring Crosby to Detroit.

Lions get: DE Maxx Crosby, 2025 third-round pick.
Raiders get: 2025 first-round pick, 2026 first-round pick, 2025 fourth-round pick, QB Hendon Hooker.

As previously mentioned, the demand to acquire Crosby would come at a significant cost. Here, the Lions are forced to give up their first-round pick for each of the next two seasons, as well as their backup quarterback Hendon Hooker.

In his second NFL season, Hooker made his NFL regular season debut in Week 6 against the Dallas Cowboys. He also showcased his abilities during the preseason, playing in all three games and completing 29 of 44 passes for 300 yards and a touchdown.

While Hooker has a lot of upside, the Lions signed Jared Goff to a four-year contract extension this offseason. As a result, if Hooker has a future as an NFL starter, it will likely lie elsewhere. Since he is unproven and has a lot of potential, the Lions could benefit from that value.

The Raiders have uncertainty at quarterback, as neither Gardner Minshew nor Aidan O’Connell appear to be their quarterback of the future. Acquiring Hooker would have value for the Raiders as they look for their long-term passer under coach Antonio Pierce.

Since general manager Brad Holmes had a lot of success in the Draft, it would be difficult to lose that much capital. However, with the Lions looking to perform well in a Super Bowl window that is open, this would be the cost of doing business in the NFL.

Here’s an example of the online reaction to a proposal involving Hooker in a trade for Crosby.
