The weather across the country is starting to turn cooler and the stakes in college football continue to rise each week. Whoever said the regular season wouldn’t matter much with an expanded playoff field and rampant conference realignment ruining regional rivalries may be right, but the tradeoff isn’t so bad if the schedule gives us some of gives the matches that it will be in the week. 8.

Call it a showdown Saturday in the SEC and Big Ten, with two conference games in each league whose results will have a major impact on the race to the first 12-team College Football Playoff.

The marquee matchup sees No. 1 Texas play No. 4 Georgia in prime time, with the Longhorns looking to cement themselves as the national championship favorites. The SEC’s noon matinee features No. 7 Alabama and No. 11 Tennessee in a matchup that neither can afford to lose if they want to feel comfortable about postseason positioning going forward.

The Big Ten, meanwhile, has two ranked versus ranked matchups, with No. 22 Michigan visiting undefeated No. 21 Illinois and No. 25 Nebraska traveling to play undefeated No. 18 Indiana.
