Here’s a recent football story from The Associated Press:

LONDON (AP) — Thomas Tuchel was hired as England coach on Wednesday and will be tasked with ending the national team’s decades-long wait for a trophy.

The German, who previously managed Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich, has signed an eighteen-month contract that starts in January and runs until the 2026 World Cup in the United States.

“This is a really exciting day for the English game. We have appointed one of the very best coaches in the world,” said Mark Bullingham, head of the English Football Association, at the unveiling of Wembley Stadium in Tuchel. “Our aim is always to win a major tournament and we believe Thomas gives us the best possible chance to do that at the next Men’s World Cup.”

By then it will have been 60 years since England won its only major trophy – the 1966 World Cup.

Fourteen different managers have failed to break that streak, with Gareth Southgate coming closest by guiding the country to back-to-back European Championship finals before resigning in July.

Champions League winner Tuchel has enjoyed success across Europe and set out his intention to emulate that success with England.

“I quickly understood that it was a big job,” he said, adding that he wanted to push England “over the line and put a second star on the shirt.”

The 51-year-old Tuchel becomes the third foreign coach of the national team after the late Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello. That has led to criticism in some British media, with the Daily Mail publishing a back-page headline declaring it a ‘dark day for England’.

While receiving well wishes from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, right-wing Reform Party leader Nigel Farage asked on X: “Why can’t we have an English manager?”

Tuchel laughed when asked if he had a message for England fans disappointed with a foreign coach.

“I’m sorry, I have a German passport,” he said. “Hopefully I can convince them and show them and prove that I am proud to be England manager and that I will do everything I can to show respect for this role and for this country.”

Bullingham said the FA had interviewed several candidates before deciding on Tuchel, but did not reveal any names.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp were both candidates.

“Obviously some were more ready for the role than others,” Bullingham said. “We were absolutely delighted to find Thomas and we believe he gives us the best chance to win the World Cup.”

In Southgate, Tuchel succeeds one of England’s most successful coaches, who led the country to the semi-finals of the World Cup and to the two European Championship finals.

Southgate resigned after eight years following the defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Tuchel fits in with the FA’s mandate to hire a coach who performs at the highest level and also knows English football.

As Chelsea manager, he defeated Guardiola’s Manchester City to win the Champions League within months of taking the job. He also won the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup with the Premier League club.

He has won league titles with PSG in France and Bayern in Germany. He takes over the England job after leaving Bayern at the end of last season.

Tuchel will be joined by his former Chelsea assistant Anthony Barry, who recently worked with Portugal at the European Championship.

By the time they take up their roles, the draw for World Cup qualifying will have taken place in December.

Under-21 coach Lee Carsley will remain in charge of England as interim coach for the Nations League matches against Greece and Ireland next month.
