Michael Keaton opening monologue crashed by Beetlejuice Mania

In his fourth time as host Saturday evening liveMichael Keaton is urged to reminisce.

During his opening monologue for SNL 50, the Beetle juice actor is forced to share the stage with Mikey Day and Andy Samberg, both of whom storm the stage in full Betelgeuse attire: untamed green hair, pinstripe suits and hideous makeup to boot.

“With Halloween coming up, I’m sure I’ll see a lot of those little kids out there dressed as Beetlejuice, which is adorable,” the Oscar nominee said while promoting the film. Beetle juice sequel, which will be released on September 6. “And I’m also going to see a lot of grown men dressed as Beetlejuice, mostly guys in their 40s, which is less cute.”

His joke brought in Day, who immediately began ululating and donning the demon’s signature raspy voice. Urging Keaton to “do the voice” and utter his catchphrase, “It’s showtime,” Keaton demurred.

“Honestly, I don’t even remember how I said it,” the host said.

At this point Samberg emerged. When Keaton wondered what he was doing there, what about his regular gig as Second Gentleman of the US Doug Emhoff? – he joked in his best Beetlejuice impression: “Yeah, the writers couldn’t jam it this week, so this is where we find ourselves.”

To complete the chaotic scene on stage in Studio 8H, the camera panned to Sarah Sherman in the audience, wearing a black and white striped outfit. Just as Keaton reached the limit of his Beetlejuice mania, the star said, “Oh no, this is just how I dress,” before also imitating him for good measure.

When Keaton noted that it seemed like everyone was quoting the 1988 original while wondering if the actors had seen the sequel, everyone chimed in with excuses of “not yet” and “it’s on the list.”

But the veteran actor wasn’t deterred and eventually gave in and introduced the evening show with the voice of Beetlejuice.
