Get ready to fall back with DST 2024

Daylight saving time is a controversial practice where the time you see on the clock is changed to allow for more sunlight in the evening. With summer time coming up again this fall, it’s natural to wonder when exactly Daylight Savings Time ends and when it starts again?

Daylight saving time – which some people are calling “daylight saving time” – started this year on March 10, 2024 and will end on November 3, 2024. As always, turning the clock back an hour promises to temporarily throw your sleep off balance. The good news, according to sleep experts: It’s better to fall back on daylight saving time than to jump forward. But it’s understandable that you should be wary of anything that could disrupt your sleep.

The time change “affects us in many ways, both visible and invisible,” says W. Christopher Winter, a neurologist and sleep medicine physician at Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine, author and host of the Sleep disconnected podcast. Your body works based on a timing mechanism called a circadian rhythm, which “controls numerous processes in our brains,” he explains. “When we experience daylight saving time, our ability to effectively manage these systems is compromised,” Winter continued. “Although daylight saving time eventually feels better as we get used to it, these problems never completely go away when we use daylight saving time.”

That makes the end of daylight saving time a positive thing for sleep, says Sabra Abbott, a sleep medicine specialist at Northwestern Medicine. “It’s daylight saving time that’s a challenge for us,” she says. “Going back to standard time will really bring things back into line.”

Fallback: Daylight Savings Time

Unfortunately, there is a pain point you have to get through first with the time change. This adjustment usually only lasts a few days for people who have a regular sleep schedule, Winter says. But for those who already have trouble sleeping, such as insomnia, sleep apnea, or even just sleeping hot, it can make existing problems worse.

To get through this adjustment period, Winter and Abbott emphasize the importance of sticking to your usual sleep-wake schedule. That means going to bed at the same time, even though it’s technically an hour later than usual. Changing your schedule or adding naps “can lengthen the process of adjusting to standard time,” says Winter. He also suggests that you “focus on the morning,” adding, “get light and exercise when you wake up.”

The end of daylight saving time is a natural time to focus on your sleep hygiene, including the areas where there is room for improvement. If your sleep isn’t what you want and you want to try something different, there are plenty of sleep products that can help you. We’ve listed some of our sleep and mattress team’s favorites below to help you get the best night’s sleep and avoid even more sleep problems.

There is a nighttime routine function that tells you when it is time to rest for bed.

Sun Zero Nordic Theater Quality Blackout Curtains (2-Pack)

While the end of daylight saving time means more energetic light in the morning, that can be problematic if you tend to sleep after sunrise. Rated as our best black curtains of 2024, these Sun Zero blackout curtains use theater-quality panels to block out 100% of sunlight. They also have the added benefit of reducing outside noise by up to 45%. The grommets on the top make it easy to open and close on demand. Choose from a range of colors and sizes to suit your room and decor.

A sleep tracker won’t necessarily help you catch better ZZZs, but it can help you stay more aware of what’s happening when you’re unconscious at night. The Fitbit Sense 2, our top pick for the best sleep trackers of 2024, is packed with sensors to track your heart rate, temperature, blood oxygen levels, and sleep quality. This smartwatch presents you with a nightly ‘Sleep Score’, which combines various data to inform you how well you slept.
