“The football side is tough love, man.”

After Adams sent a first- and second-round pick to the Packers in March 2022, the plan was for then-head coach Josh McDaniels, then-general manager Dave Ziegler and Adams’ best friend Derek Carr to find the kind of success that once team would like. None of that went according to plan.

Now all parties have disappeared.

With his hamstring healthy, Adams should play a lot this week for the Jets, with a familiar system and his good friend Aaron Rodgers at QB. Adams restructured his current contract for 2024, but left the 2025 and 2026 contract years (worth $35.64 million per year) alone.

If he wants to stay with the Jets next year, those will have to be reworked, giving Adams a say in what happens in 2025 and beyond. Those will be decisions for another day.

While Davis declined to explain what went wrong to lead to a trade, saying they were football decisions, he did say, “Too bad it didn’t work out. The only way I can sum it up.”

Davis had a close relationship with Adams, as he was one of the leaders Davis spoke to as he tried to get a sense of the locker room and the players’ overall feeling. Josh Jacobs (now with the Packers) and Maxx Crosby were also among the others.

But the football side dictated a trade, thanks largely to Adams informing the team that he would rather play elsewhere and that he wanted to play for the Jets, and this week’s wild activity was the result. It has also led to speculation about Crosby, although sources say the Raiders have not received any calls to him. And even if they did, a potential trade sounds like it’s a non-starter.

Speaking to The Athletic this week, Davis addressed the rumors in a way he rarely does.

“My basis is to never answer any of those things because otherwise you get stuck in this black hole,” Davis told the newspaper before saying, “It just doesn’t happen.”

As for Adams, Davis said he will speak with GM Tom Telesco and his staff, while also speaking with members of Antonio Pierce’s coaching staff. But he lets them make the decisions.

“Listen, I’ll consult with them, I’ll be the devil’s advocate,” Davis told NFL.com. ‘But they make the decisions. They have the authority to make the decisions.”

Few have more impact than this week. Adams’ situation was a story, what with his hamstring injury, a win over the Browns, a trade request and then weeks of uncertainty.

Davis was asked how the locker room handled the departure of one of its best players.

“You should be in the locker room and you would understand what the message is,” Davis said. “You should ask them. But I am convinced there are no problems. Yes, I know the players are okay with it.”
