Sonic fans divided over leaked Sonic x Shadow Generations change

Sonic x Shadow Generations will be a few more days, but the game is starting to leak online. As a result, fans have seen some of the changes in store from the original version of Sonic Generationsand some fans are happier than others. One change revealed includes an exchange between Sonic and Amy. In the original, when Sonic discovers a surprise birthday party, the blue blur isn’t too kind to Amy and covers her face with his hand. In the new version, Sonic no longer does that and you see Amy holding some pink and blue cupcakes.

Fans are quite divided on this change. On the plus side, Sonic is less of a jerk than in the original version. A large part of Amy’s early characterization is that she was shown to be obsessed with Sonic, as he rebuked her advances, sometimes cruelly. The slight adjustment makes Sonic appear friendlier to her, while her advances are more subtle. That’s something many Sonic fans have wanted for years; Sega isn’t suddenly going to pair the two characters together, but fans have long been calling for Sonic to be friendlier to Amy. Clearly this is a step in that direction!

All of this also makes sense considering the way Sega is trying to convey Sonic across different mediums. Sonic’s previous attitude has toned down a bit over the years, making him a bit softer and friendlier. Nowadays it’s hard to imagine Sonic shoving his hand in one of his friends’ faces, making that moment outdated compared to recent Sonic games. However, some fans have argued that Sega is now stripping Amy of the elements that made her stand out as a character in the first place. The argument is that Amy had more definition when she was head over heels for Sonic, and making that subdued makes her less interesting. Considering that some fans even preferred the original version of this series Sonic Generations.

As the Sonic franchise continues to grow in popularity, we’ll likely see Sega continue to find ways to modernize these characters and make them more accessible to audiences of all ages. If it helps these characters persevere and find new fans, that’s certainly a good thing! Sonic and Amy aren’t alone in that regard; Sega has also toned down Shadow quite a bit in recent years. Sega has noted that we probably won’t see the character with weapons like he did in Shadow the hedgehogand that’s another change that’s probably for the better!
