49ers QB Brock Purdy takes responsibility for expensive pick vs. Chiefs – NBC Sports Bay Area and California

SANTA CLARA – The 49ers stormed out of the gate in the second half Sunday, but a devastating interception at a crucial moment quickly ended the momentum San Francisco was ultimately able to gain.

While wide receiver Ronnie Bell initially took the lion’s share of the blame for the costly turnover on social media, coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Purdy executed the critical pass attempt on third-and-6 from the Chiefs’ 34-yard line.

“He (Purdy) just missed the throw,” Shanahan said after the 49ers’ 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs at Levi’s Stadium.

Purdy echoed Shanahan’s sentiment, taking full responsibility for the crucial miscommunication that halted San Francisco’s second-half comeback while still proving to be the determining factor in Sunday’s loss.

“I think I just have to play better, just with my throws and some decisions. It’s pretty simple,” Purdy said. “Obviously I have to watch the film again and all that, but my immediate reaction is that I have to play better. The second interception was on me again. Ronnie did his job. I thought he was just boxed in. I didn’t .” I didn’t know where he was going to end up on his route, so I just tried to put him on, and then he broke out pretty good. So Ronnie did his job. It was up to me.

After a 14-3 loss, the 49ers scored on consecutive drives and looked well on their way to making it a third before the deflating interception.

The Chiefs offense was immediately answered with a 13-play, 79-yard touchdown drive to make it a two-score game, with the 49ers dealt a major blow just moments after it looked like they were about to were to seize control of Sunday’s game against the NFL’s only undefeated team.

Making matters worse, this wasn’t Purdy’s only brazen interception of the day, with the 24-year-old quarterback also throwing an interception in the red zone in the fourth quarter that essentially served as the knockout in the rout of Sunday.

Purdy and the 49ers offense were already without Christian McCaffrey, Jauan Jennings, Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk at this point, but San Francisco still had numerous chances to pull out a victory on Sunday.

There’s plenty of blame to go around in this situation: The 49ers struggled in all three phases on Sunday. But you have to wonder what this game would look like if San Francisco kept that drive alive, scoring points and taking the lead, instead of giving the ball back to Kansas City before quickly falling behind by several scores.

If you ask Purdy, this costly mistake falls squarely on his shoulders. While that is a reasonable assessment, San Francisco has also failed as a unit in the bigger picture. Once again, it came up short against a team the 49ers haven’t recorded a win against since Levi’s Stadium’s inaugural season in 2014.

“We didn’t really do anything right on offense,” Shanahan said. “I know he would like to have all three picks back. Brock has played incredible this year and done some good things on offense this year, but today wasn’t that day.”
