Search and rescue underway in Roswell after severe flooding

Search and rescue efforts are underway in Roswell on Sunday after severe flooding. Two people have died.

ROSWELL, NM – Search and rescue efforts are underway in Roswell on Sunday following severe flooding. Two people have died.

The New Mexico National Guard says 290 people have been rescued and 38 taken to local hospitals so far.

All roads into Roswell are closed. NMSP says people leaving are allowed to leave Roswell, but cannot use US 285. Roads are also closed due to bridge damage in Chaves County, including 285 South between Roswell and Artesia, and State Road 2 from Dexter to Hagerman.

According to the city of Roswell, water levels have dropped in many parts of the city. But they say levels remain high in the downtown area and along the Spring River Canal.

Videos and photos on social media show cars stuck or floating in water on many streets.

A shelter has been set up at the Eastern New Mexico State Fairgrounds at 2500 SE Main Street. People can take their livestock and animals with them as long as they are in a crate.
