VIDEO: New Mexico couple waits for rescue on flooded porch in Roswell on Saturday

ROSWELL, NM – A couple in Roswell, New Mexico, narrowly escaped tragedy after their home was destroyed by catastrophic flooding last weekend.

Chaser Dean Harper and his wife were stuck on their porch and had to take shelter along with their two dogs, two cats, four snakes and lizards as the water rose Saturday.

“The back wall of the house… I’m pretty sure he fell in. The car floated away. The inside of the house is a river,” Harper said in a video he recorded (above), showing the desperate seeing a scene of the overwhelming force of the flood waters. “We’re stuck on the porch and we have all the animals with us.”

Four hours later, the Roswell Fire Department arrived to rescue the stranded family, Harper said.

Saturday night’s storms repeatedly battered the same areas, dropping up to 3 inches of rain per hour. Numerous roads in Roswell remain closed Monday after the city received an astonishing amount of rainfall, equivalent to half a year’s worth, in just one weekend.

The floods resulted in two fatalities and the rescue of almost 300 people from impassable and flooded roads.

Among those detained was Chaves County Sheriff Mike Herrington, who took to Facebook to describe the unfolding situation.

“Right now I’m sitting on the roof of my police truck,” he said in a speech video on Facebook. “I’m completely surrounded by water right now.”

The FOX Forecast Center confirmed that Roswell Airport saw as much as 5.78 inches of rain on Saturday. This surpasses the previous all-time wettest day of 5.65 inches, set on November 1, 1901.
