The promotion for the Bad film has been bright, with its stars rising for the 2024 film release. However, one area of marketing was recently embroiled in controversy. To cast members Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande recreated the famous Broadway poster for the new film, some fans took liberties with the material. Erivo took offense to one of the AI-created posters, which showed Elphaba’s hat lowered further over her forehead and wearing a stoic expression next to Grande’s Glinda. Now Grande is responding to her co-star’s comments.

The Grammy winner recently attended the annual Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles Variety asked her to comment on the AI poster that drew criticism from her co-star. Ariana Grande didn’t address whether or not she found the fan-made poster itself offensive, instead focusing on adapting to artificial intelligence and why the technology is generating such strong reactions:

It’s very complicated, because I sometimes find AI so contradictory and difficult. But I think it’s just such a huge adjustment period, and this is something that’s so much bigger than us. And the fans will have fun and make their edits, but of course…

Fans have been creating art and altering images for their own amusement long before AI became popular. However, given the immense realism of the technology, it really seemed to strike a chord with Cythia Erivo. Through her statement, which was posted to Instagram, she clarified that the hat dip – which was done to look more like the Broadway poster – erased her facial features and appeared to compare her character to that of her co-star.

While sharing her reaction to the conflict, Ariana Grande tried to show empathy for her co-star’s feelings. She also reiterated the contradictory nature of AI:

I have so much respect for my sister, Cynthia, and I love her so much, and you know, it’s just a big adjustment period. It’s like so much stimulation about something so much bigger than us, so yeah.

Considering that the Don’t look up alum didn’t share her exact feelings about the edits themselves, it can’t be said if she was actually offended by the poster. What can be said is that the Victorious alum has been in the spotlight since she was a teenager, simultaneously mixing media frenzy, gossip and internet slander throughout her career. Recently she did respond to resistance about changing the tone of her voice for her portrayal of Glinda.

Despite the objections of the Bad co-lead, fans can continue editing and rendering the promotional materials. As Ariana Grande noted, the game has changed since AI was introduced into the mix. With that, many are still trying to understand what the technology is capable of. Voice actors have already taken legal action against the general misappropriation of their voices via AI. It’s hard to say how long the “adjustment period” will last, but some might agree with Grande that it could take a while.

You can see both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in the first part of Badwhich hits theaters on November 22.
