Every four years, Americans go to the polls to vote in the presidential election.

This year, America could vote for a Kamala Harris-Tim Walz or Donald Trump-JD Vance administration, among others. In addition to electing the commander in chief, millions will also vote for U.S. representatives and senators. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for election, as are 34 seats in the Senate.

Election Day is less than a month away, so you might be wondering if you have a day off. If you plan to exercise your civic duty, here’s what you need to know.

When is Election Day 2024?

The 2024 election will be held on November 5, 2024. According to the Department of Justice, Election Day will be held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

Is Election Day a Federal Holiday?

Election Day is not a federal holiday.

However, some states consider Election Day a holiday. Most state offices will be closed on that date, including:

Twenty-four states, plus the District of Columbia, offer paid time off to vote.

Some states offer time off to vote but without pay, including Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts and Wisconsin.
