Star Trek: Voyager had a really great cast. Not all of them had the best storylines, but almost every character turned out to matter in some significant way. Sure, some still have memes about them; like that of the eternal flag, Harry Kim, but they were all loved by someone. Despite the show ending in 2001, most of the cast has come back into the fold in some form.

Star Trek: Prodigyy brought back Kathryne Janeway, Chakotay, and The Doctor, while Picard brought in Tuvok and Seven of Nine. Lower Decks had a small cameo from Tom Paris and in their final season the show will feature Paris’ best friend, the aforementioned Harry Kim.

Bringing Kim in means there are only a handful of characters left from the main cast who haven’t appeared in a Star Trek series since; Neelix, Kes and B’Elanna Torres. But of all the names that have appeared or are yet to appear, Kim deserves the most attention.

On Voyager, Kim was often the butt of some jokes and was constantly the low guy on the list. Since he was a perennial flag, many wondered if he would ever be promoted. In the latest trailer for Lower Decks, one of the Kims we see is a lieutenant and we hope this is the prime-timeline version.

It’s the fact that he’s been an Ensign for so long that we think a single episode of Lower Decks just isn’t enough. He spent so much time talking about Voyager not being a leader that we’d love to see more of Kim doing his thing. We’ve seen some episodes where an alternate reality version of Kim was more assertive, confident, and sure of herself, but not so much that we’re satisfied.

We need to see more. He and his actor Garrett Wang deserve a chance to flush out the character. We know Wang will be back with Kim in Lower Decks, and we’re almost certain he’d also return for a live-action turn if the opportunity arises. With Star Trek being what it is, it wouldn’t be a stretch to have Kim go back in time to see the crew of the Enterprise during an episode of Strange New Worlds, or go to the future and meet his old friend The Doctor featured in an episode of Starfleet Academy.

Seeing a full-fledged Kim is something we as fans would love to see.
