Vinicius Junior scores a hat-trick as Real Madrid beat Dortmund 5-2 in the Champions League

Vinicius Junior scored a hat-trick as Real Madrid turned boos into cheers with a 5-2 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League Tuesday, while Paris Saint-Germain dropped more points.

Madrid trailed 2-0 at half-time in a repeat of last season’s final, but rallied with three goals from Vinicius Junior – who also scored in the final in May – and one each from Antonio Rudiger and Lucas Vazquez.

The crowd had cheered loudly after the half-time whistle as Madrid struggled and looked set for a second successive Champions League defeat after 14 games unbeaten in the competition.

“We know that when we play at home in front of our fans, anything can happen,” said Vinicius Junior. “When we got into the dressing room, we were all very quiet. We just listened to the coach and said only one thing: if we scored the first goal, we would rally and win, and we did that again.”

Christian Pulisic scored directly from a corner kick admitted it was an accident – while there was VAR heartache for 16-year-old Francesco Camarda as AC Milan defeated Brugge 3-1 to end the wait for a Champions League win.

American forward Pulisic looked stunned by his performance – known as an ‘Olimpico’ – as Milan finally earned their first three points after losing their first two games in the new format.

Belgian side Brugge had to play most of the match with 10 men after Raphael Onyedika was sent off in the 40th minute, but still leveled the score in the 51st minute with a goal from Kyriani Sabbe. Tijjani Reijnders later scored twice to give Milan the much-needed victory.

Camarda was used in the 75th and became the youngest Italian debutant in the Champions League. He briefly thought he had also broken the record for youngest Champions League scorer, but his header was ruled offside and ended the joyous celebrations.

Arsenal are coming back

Arsenal then steadied the ship 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth last week in the English Premier League he defeated the Ukrainian Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0, but ended the match with even more worries about injuries.

Arsenal needed an own goal to get past Shakhtar as the attack struggled to gain a lead without injured duo Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka. Now manager Mikel Arteta is also dealing with an apparent knee injury to left-back Riccardo Calafiori ahead of Sunday’s match against Liverpool.

Gabriel Martinelli’s shot bounced off the post, hit the back of goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk and ended up in the net in the 29th at the Emirates Stadium. Riznyk made up for it by saving a penalty from Leandro Trossard in the 77th.

Villa on top

Villa are playing in Europe’s top competition for the first time in 41 years and are the only team to have won their first three matches after beating Bologna 2-0. John McGinn and Jhon Duran were the second-half scorers at Villa Park for Unai Emery’s side.

Liverpool, Bayer Leverkusen, Brest and Benfica could all join Villa on nine points at the top of the 36-team standings on Wednesday.

El Bilal Toure scored in stoppage time to give Stuttgart a 1-0 win over Juventus, ending a Champions League match with ten men for the second time in a row. Juventus goalkeeper Mattia Perin had recently stopped Enzo Millot’s penalty.

Wilfried Singo scored from about 30 yards out as Monaco remained unbeaten with a 5-1 win over Red Star Belgrade. Monaco has seven points from the first three games.

Girona achieved its first ever Champions League victory by beating Slovan Bratislava 2-0. Sporting Lisbon defeated Sturm Graz 2-0.
