Spider-Man 4 script “Really lit a fire in me,” says Tom Holland

Nearly three years ago, Tom Holland headlined Spider-Man: No Way Home opposite his two immediate predecessors, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire, in what turned out to be the highest-grossing film Sony has ever released. Holland hasn’t returned to the MCU since, and he hasn’t even made any cameos. Regardless, Holland is still on board for Peter Parker’s next adventure, and he’s already read the script for Spider-Man 4.

“I read the Spider-Man 4 script three weeks ago and it really lit a fire in me,” Holland said during his recent appearance on Rich Roll’s YouTube show. “Zendaya and I would sit down and read it together and sometimes we would bounce around the living room and say, ‘This is a real movie worthy of the fans’ respect.’ But there are a few things we need to figure out before we can really get that going.”

Holland didn’t mention that Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton is in talks to direct Spider-Man 4, but he did say there are “fantastic people we’re working with right now.” The actor also noted that “we have a creative design, a pitch and a concept that is excellent. It needs work, but the writers are doing a great job.”

Furthermore, Holland reiterated that he does not want to return for a film that falls short of the three Spider-Man films he has already made. And he’s using his greater influence in the industry to make that happen.

“I’m at a point now where I can say ‘no,’ and now that I’ve been given that power, I’m struggling to figure out what the right thing to do is. It meant giving my opinion and gaining a foothold in certain cases that I have not been allowed to do in the past. And I think the learning curve I’m on now is dealing with that new sense of power, and making sure I don’t abuse it. but making sure I do what’s best for myself rather than for the studio. And really what’s best for the character, I don’t want to make another movie just for the sake of making it.

Sony and Marvel have not yet set a date for Spider-Man 4.
