The Airbus 330 was taking off from Logan International Airport to Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport when the Delta crew reported the problem, the statement said.

The FAA is investigating.

The incident prompted a temporary shutdown of the runway while the Delta plane was towed away, a Massport spokesperson said.

A ground hold was issued for a brief period to move the Delta plane but was later lifted, spokesperson Jennifer Mehigan said.

“There may still be delays, but they won’t last long,” Mehigan said shortly after 9 p.m

She referred questions to Delta, but the airlines could not immediately be reached for comment.

The incident marked the second time this week that engine problems were reported on a plane departing Logan.

A United Airlines flight to Washington/Dulles International Airport had to return to the gate Monday evening after an engine problem caused a small fire at the edge of the runway, the Globe reported.

The plane taxied around 8 p.m. The fire was quickly extinguished and the aircraft returned to the gate under its own power.

There were no injuries.
