Arne Slot ‘proud’ of record start at Liverpool

Arne Slot says he is proud of the record-breaking start to his Liverpool reign but insists winning trophies is the most important thing for him.

Wednesday’s 1-0 win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League means that Liverpool have won eleven of their first twelve games in a season for the first time in the club’s history.

It is also the first time that Liverpool has won six consecutive away games at the start of a season.

“We can be proud because so many great teams have worn this shirt and so many great managers have been at the club, so achieving something that hasn’t been done before is almost impossible and always fun,” said Slot.

“But there is something much more fun than records and you know what I mean by that: trophies.”

Darwin Nunez’s first-half goal was enough to secure maximum points at the Red Bull Arena, where Liverpool were in control for long periods before mounting some pressure late on.

“I don’t think we started the game that well, but after the first fifteen minutes I liked a lot of what I saw,” Slot added.

“We played through their press and often opened attacks, which led to the first goal and many other chances. It’s a shame at the end of a match like that when you need a big role from your two central defenders and the goalkeeper. Such a match should have been ours after 60 to 70 minutes.

“It’s good to see all our players scoring. In the run-up, Cody (Gakpo) and Mo (Salah) were just as important as Darwin. But Darwin was strong, comfortable on the ball, fought when he had to defend, and he made life very difficult for Leipzig’s two centre-backs.

“When you play against a big team, there will always be moments. I liked that we had total dominance in this match, just like in all the other matches except Chelsea. After Chelsea I was more worried. This was much more the way I like to see my team play. We had a lot more ball possession.”

Slot revealed that Salah was sent off just after the hour mark with one eye on Sunday’s Premier League match against Arsenal.

“It is a difficult list of matches. Curtis Jones was the same, he hasn’t played 90 minutes yet,” he added.

“We have some injuries now, so I have to take care of the players. There is a big match on Sunday and I have to use as many players as possible in these difficult months.”
