Tyrese Maxey is ready to lead Sixers with two star leaders sidelined

CAMDEN, NJ – The Philadelphia 76ers have perhaps the most talented Big 3 in the league led by Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey. However, at the start of the season, Embiid and George will be sidelined as they recover from their ailments.

That means Maxey will have to take the lead in this group, just as he did in the two months Embiid missed in the 2023-24 season due to a meniscus injury in his left knee. The Sixers had their issues when the big guy was down as Maxey adjusted to being No. 1 on opposing scouting reports, but now that he’s thrown into this situation, he’s ready to lead after learning from experiences from the past.

“I learned a lot,” Maxey said. “Obviously I said several times, you hate to see him go down last year, but I think it really helped me grow my game with my mind. I’ve seen many different coverages. Teams were trying to do a lot of different things, trying to score my success and die. So I had to find ways around that: getting my teammates involved, making some off-ball plays, doing different things to help my team be successful.”

Maxey knows what it’s like to lead the Sixers amid injuries in the past. It’s obviously not an ideal situation, but until Embiid and George can get back on the floor, there will be more on Maxey’s plate to ensure Philadelphia succeeds without its two key pieces.

“It’s life,” Maxey added. “Everyone goes through things, every team goes through things. We know it will change once the games come, just because of the situation or whatever, but guys have to step up. Guys still have to go out there and compete. Over the past week and a half, or however long it’s been since P has been out, guys have been going out to compete. You just prepare yourself for every situation.”

Maxey will lead the Sixers in a tough game to open the season at home against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM EDT from the Wells Fargo Center.
