Menendez brothers case: Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón will take the stand this week

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said he plans to make his position on a possible conviction of the Menendez brothers by the end of the week.

Lyle and Erik Menendez were sentenced to life in prison for the murder of their parents in their Beverly Hills home in 1989. But the brothers’ defense team has pushed for a new conviction over the past year based on new evidence supporting the brothers . ‘ alleges sexual and physical abuse by their parents.

Gascón said he originally planned to make a position on the defense’s arguments at a hearing in November. But given the renewed public attention to the case generated this month by a new Netflix documentary, he’s moving up that timeline.

The Menendez case is being reevaluated

Can Erik and Lyle Menendez be convicted and released? Here’s a look at the process and how often resentment happens.

He told CNN on Tuesday that prosecutors in his office are deeply divided over the defense’s appeal.

“I have a group of people, including some who were involved in the original trial, who are adamant that they should spend the rest of their lives in prison and that they were not abused,” Gascón said.

“I have other people in the office who believe they were probably abused and they deserve some relief.”

He said there is no doubt that the two brothers killed their parents. The only question is whether they deserve any relief from their sentences after thirty years.

In addition to the claims of new evidence of abuse, the defense team also argues that the brothers deserve some relief because of the decades they have already spent in prison and the rehabilitation they have undergone.

“I plan to make a decision by the end of this week, and I promised to do so when we received a lot of questions. In fact, we have been studying this case for more than a year.”
