Confusion remains about how to watch the Trail Blazers game on opening night

Following tip-off Wednesday night, confusion continued over which platforms will air the Portland Trail Blazers’ season opener.

The team said earlier Wednesday that local customers of DirecTV and streaming service Fubo would be able to watch Blazers games, starting with the opener against Golden State, after the platforms agreed to broadcast games as part of the franchise’s efforts to make broadcasts available to more viewers.

But Fubo customers complained on social media that they couldn’t find the broadcast, and Fubo Support replied to a user on

Similarly, a DirecTV customer’s complaint was answered with an subscription service from the team.

The problems with the carriage caught Blazers executives off guard.

Blazers broadcasts should be available on both platforms “soon,” according to Natalie King, Blazers senior vice president of communications and public affairs.

“For DirecTV, there will be a pop-up feed set up,” King told The Oregonian/OregonLive on Wednesday evening. “On Fubo they are still figuring it out.”

Last month, the Blazers announced plans to leave Root Sports, a year after Comcast Xfinity moved the network to the highest package. The team then announced a partnership with Sinclair Broadcast Group that the Blazers said would help them reach four times more viewers than last season.

Sinclair has stations in Portland, Medford and Eugene, as well as two in Washington.

Most games are broadcast in Portland on KATU 2.2. The station, branded Charge, is available both through cable providers such as Xfinity and over the air using a digital antenna.

  • HDTV antennas are very easy to install and cost about $20. You can buy one at your local Bi-Mart or Fred Meyer, or buy one online at Walmart or from Amazon and have it delivered to your home quickly.

But hours before the season’s 7 p.m. tipoff, it was unclear whether games would become available to customers of other platforms.

A page titled “How to Watch” on the team’s website states that “all available games” would be streamed on Fubo and broadcast on satellite via DirecTV. Dewayne Hankins, the Blazers’ president of business operations, confirmed that the deals with the platforms had been completed.

Games are currently unavailable on other streaming services, including YouTubeTV, Hulu and DirecTV Stream, but that could change after January 1, when KUNP in Portland will switch from Univision to the Rip City TV Network and air games alongside Charge. . Deals with the streaming platforms still need to be negotiated.

Last week, the team announced it would be giving away 5,000 digital antennas to fans who signed up. According to the website, all 5,000 have been claimed. A standard digital antenna can cost about $20.

Fans are also encouraged to subscribe to BlazerVision, a streaming service through the NBA app that costs $120 per year or $19.99 per month.

But even on Xfinity, finding the games was a challenge as of Wednesday afternoon. The cable provider airs KATU Charge in Portland on channels 302 and 1170. But Wednesday’s channel guide listed episodes of “CSI: Miami” for 7 and 8 p.m., while “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” was scheduled to start at 9 a.m. . to 10 p.m

That may be a point of frustration for some, but Hankins confirmed that games would indeed be broadcast live on that channel regardless of what the guide says.

On Wednesday evening, a Comcast spokesperson said the channel guide issue had been resolved.

The Charge channels on Xfinity were also converted to HD channels Wednesday afternoon, Hankins said.
