Lyle and Erik Menendez press conference live updates: Prosecutor provides update on murder case

What you need to know about the Menendez casepublished at 9:15 PM British Summer Time

Jose and Kitty Menendez were found dead in their Beverly Hills mansion after being shot multiple times in August 1989.

Their sons – Erik and Lyle – called the police and told authorities that they had come home and found their parents dead.

Authorities initially did not suspect the brothers. But the duo began to scrutinize their behavior of lavish spending, gambling and partying.

A confession to their phycologist was their downfall when the doctor’s girlfriend audio recorded them making the confession.

In March 1990, the brothers were charged by the Los Angeles Police Department. They were tried in 1993 and the brothers admitted to the murders but argued that they acted in self-defense and feared their parents would kill them first.

They detailed years of emotional, physical and sexual abuse – namely at the hands of their father, Jose – who worked as a film director in Hollywood.

Lyle and Erik testified that they confronted their parents about the sexual abuse and that things in their household had become combative and they believed their parents were planning to kill them.

Family members testified about the abuse they witnessed, but no one said they witnessed sexual abuse firsthand.

Prosecutors argued their motive was money. They outlined their methodical planning, which included purchasing two shotguns days before the murders and their expenses afterward. They depicted the brothers as spoiled rich people who thought they could get away with anything.

Their first trial ended in a mistrial, but a second in 1995 led to them being convicted of first-degree murder.
