Should the NFL Expand Replay Reviews?

After Week 8’s “Thursday Night Football” game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Minnesota Vikings, we know two things to be true. The Detroit Lions’ hangover is real, and the NFL board still leaves a lot to be desired.

Trailing 28-20, a missed facemask by Los Angeles against Minnesota quarterback Sam Darnold dashed any hope the Vikings had of a comeback and reignited the annual conversation about why NFL officials aren’t getting more help have at their disposal.

At the end of the day, I get it. These athletes move at a million miles per hour, and things happen in seconds. So we understand that it is difficult to lead. That said, it’s 2024 and I still don’t believe we’re making the most of the technology yet.

Which brings us to today’s Question of the Day:

Should the NFL expand on reviewable plays?

My answer: Absolute. Ultimately, there’s no real reason not to expand the replay capabilities. I’ve had a fairly simple solution in mind for several years now.

An additional referee or “rules expert” must be stationed in New York City at NFL headquarters for each game. That specific officer will have a direct line to the lead officer they are working with that week, and they would be able to provide real-time assistance to the crews on duty in the field. Something like this already exists with the newly added (in 2021) ‘replay assistance’, but its scope is too limited.

Questionable pass interference call? Pick up that flag, Bob. Ticky tackle clearing the passer penalty? Not today! Facemask missed at a crucial point in the game, right before a Hail Mary never should have happened? (Get in line, Minnesota. You’re all acting like you’re the first team to get hurt by a blatantly bad call.)

What about you? Do you think the NFL should expand on which plays can be reviewed using instant replay? Let us know in the comments below.
