Hurricane Kristy’s forecast five-day path as of 5 a.m. today.

Hurricane Kristy weakens as it moves northwest over the eastern Pacific Ocean.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Kristy was a Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph at 5 a.m. in Hawaii and was located about 2,000 miles east-southeast of Hilo. The hurricane was moving west-northwest at 14 mph (22 km/h) and is expected to turn northwest later today, then northwest, with a slower forward speed over the weekend.

Forecasters expect Kristy to continue to lose strength in the coming days and will likely become a post-tropical cyclone by Sunday.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (48 km) from central Kristy and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 110 miles (170 km).

For Hawaii, the National Weather Service is forecasting light to moderate trade winds and light flurries this evening. Winds will increase over the weekend, with showers and thunderstorms likely to mainly affect windward areas. The breezy, showery trade winds are expected to continue until the middle of next week.

A high surf advisory is in effect for the east coast of Hawaii until 6 p.m. Saturday as large waves continue to pound coastlines from Kauai to Hawaii Island. The National Weather Service issued the advisory early this morning, warning that surf along these coasts is expected to peak this afternoon, with waves reaching heights of 10 to 12 feet before gradually subsiding over the weekend.

The swell, which will come from the north-northeast at moderate to large levels, is expected to bring strong breaking waves and strong currents posing significant hazards to beachgoers. Ocean safety officials advise staying out of the water where surf is high and following all posted warnings to avoid dangerous conditions.

Swimmers, surfers and paddlers should be careful as unexpectedly strong currents can develop along the coastline, affecting even areas that appear calm.
