Thurston High is on lockdown, other nearby schools have been locked out due to threats

According to Springfield Public Schools, Thurston High School was closed Friday after a threat was made against the school.

School officials said law enforcement officers were on the scene “out of an abundance of caution,” and authorities asked the public to avoid the area.

In addition, Thurston Middle School, Thurston Elementary School and Ridgeview Elementary School were in a lockout, Allison McGowan, a spokesperson for Springfield Public Schools, said shortly after 11 a.m.

During a lockdown, students and employees stay in secure rooms with closed doors. A lockout means that the perimeter of the building is secured, while classes inside can continue as normal. In both cases, no one is allowed to enter or leave the schools.

“Please do not attend the school,” the district said in a statement. “No one is allowed to enter or leave the building, because students and staff are accommodated there. We will share information as it becomes available.”

The incident is the latest in a series of similar threats hitting schools in the Eugene-Springfield area this school year.

Notably, Thurston High School continues to be marked by a traumatic history: In 1998, it was the site of a mass shooting that left two students dead and many more injured.

Police and district officials were assessing the current threat. District officials said they would provide updates on the situation as soon as possible.
