World Series Game 2: Can the New York Yankees bounce back from their final loss in Game 1 against the Los Angeles Dodgers?

Only one more game has been played and this World Series has already produced another classic in the long, legendary rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

It seemed impossible that this series could live up to the insane expectations that had dominated the build-up, or that it would become another memorable chapter in the 83-year-old rivalry these two teams share in the World Series alone.

But with one swing of the bat on Friday, Freddie Freeman made sure Game 1 did just that, hitting the first-ever walk-off grand slam in a World Series with his Dodgers trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the 10th collection and until their last outing. He ran around the bases as Dodger Stadium erupted in delirium, celebrating that their team had somehow stolen a 6-3 victory in Game 1.

Now, just a day later, the Yankees must regroup from their final loss before Game 2 on Saturday night as they face the Dodgers once again on the LA team’s home field.

For the Dodgers, Game 2 marks a golden opportunity to assert their authority on the series while feeling confident before traveling to New York for at least the next two games.

“To get to 1-0 is a big start,” Freeman said after the match.

The Dodgers are now three wins away from winning the World Series and historically, teams that have won Game 1 have won the series 121 out of 191 times (65%) of the time.

Since 1995, that has increased to 23 out of 29 times (79%) and in the current 2-3-2 format, teams that won Game 1 at home have won the series 68 out of 101 times (67%).

Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees singles in the seventh inning.

But the Yankees are still staying positive heading into Game 2.

“We played really well against that team all game,” Yankees fielder Alex Verdugo said after their loss, according to MLB.com. “At the end of the day, we are the two best teams here, so we come here with our heads held high and full of confidence, and we go out here and compete again.”

Both teams are loaded with star talent, and the Yankees can rely on the likes of Aaron Judge, Juan Soto and Giancarlo Stanton to pull off the impossible, like Freeman did for the Dodgers.

The way the Yankees use their pitch will be heavily scrutinized in Game 2, including after manager Aaron Boone’s decision to have Nestor Cortes pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning. Cortes had not pitched since September 18 after suffering a left elbow strain, but was brought in to challenge the Dodgers’ left-handed pair of Ohtani and Freeman.

“If I wasn’t ready enough and healthy enough, I wouldn’t have done it. And they wouldn’t have let me do that,” Cortes told MLB.com after the game. “So I think we’re in a good place. I get another chance. We have to win four games in this Series. It was within reach, but we will come back strong tomorrow.”

Carlos Rodón will start on the mound for the Yankees in Game 2, hoping to stifle the Dodgers’ offense, while Yoshinobu Yamamoto hopes to replicate his dominant pitching performance against the Yankees in June.
