Derek Jeter examines Aaron Boone’s decision to remove Gerrit Cole from World Series Game 1

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone came under scrutiny Friday night for a handful of decisions in the team’s Game 1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.

While he used Nestor Cortes in a big spot in the 10th inning with the bases loaded and used Oswaldo Cabrera as a defensive replacement after Jasson Dominguez pinch-run for Gleyber Torres was under fire two moves, Derek Jeter took a different route during the FOX broadcast .

Jeter took a closer look at Boone’s decision to remove Gerrit Cole from his starting lineup.

“I know we talk about this all the time, and I don’t want to be one of those guys who says, ‘Back in the day when we played.’ But when we played the Mets in 2000, Al Leiter threw Game 6. He threw 140-something pitches — 140-something pitches,” Jeter said.

“Gerrit Cole dominated this game. He dominated the game. And if you take him out after 88 pitches, for whatever reason, that’s a domino effect, not just on this game tonight, on tomorrow’s game and on the rest of this match.” I just think that when you have someone who acts the way Gerrit Cole acted tonight, you should leave him out of there as long as possible.

Cole pitched six innings and allowed one run on four hits. He was removed in the seventh inning for Clay Holmes after Teoscar Hernandez singled.

Cortes was the one who ultimately left the walk-off grand slam to Freddie Freeman. Boone defended the decision to bring him into the game even though he hadn’t pitched since September 18.

Cortes threw two pitches.

“I knew it would be hard to double Shohei if Tim Hill gets him on the ground, and then Mookie behind him is a tough match,” Boone said, via the New York Post. “So I felt convicted in that place together with Nestor.”
