Some Los Angeles Chargers fans on the West Coast had to jump through streaming hoops to see the team’s Monday night football game against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 7.

And the second streaming-only game in a staggered doubleheader didn’t even get a good rating.

According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, the game only drew 1.8 million viewers. It’s a horrifying number, considering the Baltimore Ravens-Tampa Bay Buccaneers game, which aired on ABC and ESPN networks, grossed 16 million or more. The previous week’s game earned over 17 million.

Chargers fans who were not in specific local locations could only watch the loss to the Cardinals on ESPN+ streaming. It was the second in the doubleheader, overlapping with the first at an odd start time of 9:00 PM ET and, honestly, not that appetizing of a matchup.

Maybe the experiment produced numbers that those involved like. But for most fans, a staggered doubleheader probably wasn’t great. And for Chargers fans, it downright stunk, which is fitting because the game also stunk as the team went down 17-15 and settled for five field goals despite Justin Herbert’s burst from nearly 400 yards.
