Philadelphia Union announces that goalkeeper Holden Trent has passed away at the age of 25

The Philadelphia Union has announced the sudden and shocking death of goalkeeper Holden Trent at the age of 25.

The club confirmed the goalkeeper’s death in a statement released on Saturday afternoon. No cause of death has been released.

“The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking passing of Holden Trent,” the club said. “While he was a great player and fierce competitor, more importantly he was a dedicated son, brother, fiancée and teammate who made those around him better.

“He embodied the true meaning of determination, dedication and perseverance, and he will be deeply missed. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, his fiancée and his friends. Out of respect for Holden’s friends and family, there will be no further statements requesting that their privacy be respected as they grieve at this time.”

Trent’s family also released their own statement via their son’s Instagram account.

According to screenshots taken on October 24 from Trent’s social media accounts, he was admitted to the intensive care unit earlier this week for unknown reasons.

A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, Trent played college football at West Virginia University and High Point University. He also played for the academies of USL clubs Charlotte Independence and South Georgia Tormenta FC.

From there, he was selected 28th overall by the Union in the 2023 MLS Super Draft.

According to the club’s website, Trent has played six games for the MLS Next Pro team in Philadelphia, with his most recent playing time coming on June 26 this year against New York Red Bulls II.
