Vanderbilt Commodores fall just short of another historic victory against Longhorns

While the Vanderbilt Commodores kept this one close again, they didn’t have enough chaos for their second Top 25 win in school history.

The Commodores fell 27-24 to the Texas Longhorns, just shy of another historic win.

I don’t want to sound like a broken record over the past few weeks, but this was another gutsy performance from do-it-all quarterback Diego Pavia.

However, “Pavia had no more magic”, was an unfortunately justified call from the broadcast. The team failed to convert on fourth down, which led to the fan favorite hoisting one up, which ended up being an easy interception for the Longhorns defense.

It wasn’t a stat-filled day, but he battled a knee injury to get back on the field.

After entering the game with just one interception on the season, the senior quarterback ended up throwing in this game.

The second led to the dagger touchdown, putting Texas ahead by two scores with under two minutes to go.

The time of possession in this one was much more favorable than how the Longhorns typically win games. Vanderbilt has typically kept their games exciting this season with long methodical drives and keeping the ball out of the opponent’s hands. It was much more even with this one.

However, that could have been the difference between victory and defeat.

There was a long stretch where Quinn Ewers completed 17 consecutive passes. At that point, Texas built the 21-7 lead, making it seem like things were getting out of hand.

It’s hard to compete when you can’t stop the other team’s quarterback from completing a pass.

The defense deserves some shine for their role in this one, though, as they were disruptive enough to stay close while the offense struggled to put points on the board.

Sophomore linebacker Bryan Longwell once again led the team in tackles, already entering the day with a nine-tackle lead for season totals. He did not bring down Ewers in this, but shone in the run defense.

In terms of sacks, fellow sophomore linebacker Randon Fontenette had the most impact. He played a role in bringing down the Longhorns passer on two separate plays, and in breaking up a pass.

Next up for the Commodores is a matchup with the Auburn Tigers.
