Florida State, which showed life on just one offensive possession in the first half, is once again facing a double-digit halftime deficit this season.

The Seminoles managed to score a touchdown on offense for the first time since the second quarter against Clemson (October 6) and only the ninth time this season, but their ineptitude on the only other two drives in the game kept them from could go further. close the gap the Hurricanes created on their opening drive of the game.

Miami has leaned on its rushing attack so far in the matchup, with Damien Martinez rushing for 57 yards and Mark Fletcher Jr. at 56 after both scored touchdowns on the ground. Heisman Trophy favorite Cam Ward is currently 11 of 19 for 141 yards, averaging 11.9 yards per completion, as he does his best to navigate a Florida State pass rush that is significantly disrupting Miami’s rhythm.

The Seminoles have already given up 19 first downs, allowing Miami to convert seven of nine third-down attempts — though FSU already has three sacks and four tackles for loss on the night.

While complaining about the officiating is usually a good thing, especially when it comes to ACC referees who are so terrible that no one is safe from the consequences, there have been a few cases of baffling non-calls. However, any benefits from those penalties could have been negated because FSU has done an excellent job of collecting penalty meters itself. Most frustrating must have been the illegal substitution violations FSU committed on two different crucial drives – a penalty that reflects and is directly the result of coaching.

If there is any hope of FSU pulling off the unimaginable, we’ll need to see a little more spark in the Seminoles’ offensive attack.
