Erik ten Hag has been sacked as manager of Manchester United following Sunday’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to West Ham United, the club announced on Monday.

Jarrod Bowen scored an injury time penalty to leave United in fourteenth place with just three wins from the opening nine games of the league campaign.

Ten Hag was at risk of losing his job last season after finishing eighth in the league, but an encouraging win over Manchester City in the FA Cup final saw him receive a contract extension until 2026. The FA Cup was Ten Hag’s second trophy . Hag won during his time at Old Trafford, following the Carabao Cup victory in 2023.

“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him the best for the future,” United said in a statement.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, while a permanent head coach is recruited.”
