Halloween weather in Michigan is just a little scary

The weather on Halloween won’t be perfect, but it won’t be a nightmare either.

A storm system will move through Michigan Wednesday evening through Halloween. At this time, it appears that most of the wet weather with this storm system will occur during the first half of Thursday, potentially keeping trick-or-treating time mostly dry for Lower Michigan.

It seems like around Halloween is a very common time for our first major fall storm system. For years, we see our first wet snowflakes in Lower Michigan around Halloween.

Here is the precipitation forecast in six-hour increments. This clearly shows the rain crossing Michigan. The good news is that the precipitation will not be snow.

For the southern half of Lower Michigan, Halloween should have an intermittent showery pattern, especially in the morning and afternoon. Northern Michigan will see some pretty steady rain in the morning, but it will also taper off in the afternoon. The Upper Peninsula will be quite wet until Halloween night.

Here’s a good way to get an idea of the amount of rain while trick-or-treating. The forecast below is the total precipitation forecast for Halloween from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Ann Arbor, Detroit, Flint and the Thumb will have leftover showers producing a tenth of an inch of rain. That is generally considered light rain and will likely end sometime around mid-afternoon. Even the southeastern corner of Michigan could see dry weather during trick-or-treating. Watch for a dry stretch from southwest Lower, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Muskegon to the northeast corner of Lower Michigan. A few light rain showers are possible in the Northwest Lower by mid-afternoon on Halloween. In general it will not get too wet in the late afternoon and evening.

Temperatures will be quite warm compared to many Halloweens in the past. Early afternoon temperatures should be well into the 60s for most of Lower Michigan by 2 p.m.

Cooler temperatures will develop in the dark, but by no means cold. Look for temperatures in the 50s during trick-or-treating over southern Michigan and in the 40s over northern Lower Michigan.

We’ll have to wrap the kids up a bit, but you certainly don’t have to put them in a warm, furry costume. Check here for updates on the exact timing of the end of rain on Halloween.
