Real Madrid named best club, but absent from Ballon d’Or ceremony

Real Madrid was named club of the year but was absent from the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris on Monday, where striker Vinicius Junior was beaten by Manchester City’s Rodri for the best men’s player award.

The European champion said its representatives would not go “where it is not respected” after learning Vinicius would miss out on the prestigious trophy, AFP and Spanish media reported.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti and striker Kylian Mbappe both won individual awards, but neither was present to receive their awards.

Spain international Rodri, 28, won the men’s Ballon d’Or ahead of Vinicius and Real Madrid team-mate Jude Bellingham.

Brazil international Vinicius, 24, was Real Madrid’s top scorer last season as the Spanish giants won the Champions League and La Liga.

After Rodri was confirmed as the winner, Vinicius posted on X: “I’ll do it 10x if I have to. They’re not ready for it.”

It was reported that Real believed Vinicius’ teammate Dani Carvajal had also been overlooked for the top prize.

“If the award criteria do not indicate Vinicius as the winner, then the same criteria must refer to Carvajal as the winner,” the club said in a statement to AFP and Spanish media.

“Since this was not the case, it is clear that the Ballon d’Or-Uefa does not respect Real Madrid. And Real Madrid does not go where it is not respected.”

But ahead of the ceremony, organizers said that “no player or club knows who has won the Ballon d’Or”.

BBC Sport has approached Real Madrid for comment.

The awards, organized by France Football, are based on votes by a panel of journalists from the top 100 FIFA countries.

In previous editions, the winner was announced a few days before the ceremony, but this year the organizers chose to keep the identity of the winner secret.

Mbappe shared the Gerd Muller Trophy – awarded to Europe’s best men’s scorer – with Harry Kane, the England and Bayern Munich striker, after both players finished with 44 goals last season.

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba said during Monday’s presentation that he was “disappointed” not to see his former manager Ancelotti after winning the Johan Cruyff Trophy for men’s coach of the year.

Ancelotti posted on X: “I would like to thank my family, my president, my club, my players and especially Vini and Carvajal.”

Real-life midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni posted a photo of himself with teammate Vinicius and wrote: “Nothing will take away what you have achieved, my brother. We all know it… They are not ready for what you are going to deliver.”

Spanish newspaper Marca reported that Real planned to send a fifty-man delegation and had canceled plans to broadcast a five-hour program on RMTV.
